Please be aware that Google Maps driving directions from the Kingsway Wallasey Tunnel are incorrect (they send you down roads designated for emergency vehicles only). So if you are approaching from Liverpool by car and using the Kingsway Wallasey Tunnel (rather than the Queensway Birkenhead tunnel) then substitute the directions below for the last part of the Google Maps directions.
By Car From Liverpool via the Kingsway Wallasey Tunnel
From Liverpool take the Kingsway Wallasey tunnel (signposts for the M53, M56, New Brighton).
If you are following Google Maps do NOT take the 'sharp left toward Oakdale Road' (this is for emergency vehicles only), instead proceed toward the toll booths. Toll is currently £1.40 each way for a car, motorbikes are free. Check out the
Mersey Tunnels site for details.
- Once through the toll booths keep to the lefthand side of the road, up the ramp to the roundabout.
- At the roundabout take the first left onto Gorsey Lane (A5027). Stay in the left lane.
- At the traffic lights turn left onto Dock Road (A5139).
- Continue for approx 1 mile (1.5 km) to a roundabout (with traffic lights) turn right onto Tower Road (A554). Follow signs to the Woodside Mersey Ferries through red painted steel bridge.
- Continue straight on at another roundabout and over a second bridge.
-
- After the second bridge are a set of traffic lights, turn left into Tower Wharf, then right at the small roundabout into Egerton Wharf.
- Immediately on your left is the ARI, Twelve Quays House and car park. It is the building with the curved roof - if you cross a green painted steel bridge, you've gone too far.
Tunnel and Public Transport information
If you're travelling through the Tunnels by car or using public transport then check out the timetables and travel alerts from the
Mersey Travel website.
By Foot From Hamilton Square Station
The underground rail service from Liverpool (
Moorfields, Lime Street, Central or
James Street stations) to Birkenhead
Hamilton Square station is quite frequent, you should not have
to wait more than 10 minutes for a train.
- Turn left out of Hamilton Square station towards Woodside Ferry, crossing Bridge Street.
- You could turn left into Canning Street, but this is a busy road and walking along it not very pleasant. So instead cross Canning Street and turn next left into Shore Road. You'll know you're on Shore Road because of the tramway.
- Basically now keep following the tramway along Shore Road. Being careful of trams (if they are running) and cars as the pavement is a little obscure at times.
- After approximately 400 meters you reach the campus of Wirral Metropolitian College. Continue to follow the tramway straight on through the campus car park, heading towards the large green metal and wooden Egerton Bridge. It may be more pleasant to walk the other side of the car park alongside Morpeth Dock. From here you can look across to Twelve Quays House, it is the one with the curved roof.
- Once you reach the end of the car park say goodbye to the tramway and turn right over Edgerton Bridge. The ARI, Twelve Quays House, is the first building on your right.
Total walking time, approximately twelve minutes.
By Foot from Woodside ferry
If you have taken advantage of the scenic ferry trip across the Mersey from Liverpool, disembark at Woodside Ferry.
- Leave the ferry terminal by the main doors. Stop for a look at U-boat U534 on your left that is now a tourist attraction - perhaps stop there if you have time, or come back later.
- Just before you reach the tramway and the end of the pavement, turn right, keeping the tramway on your left and follow the pavement round to Shore Road.
