  • The role of environment in galaxy evolution

Dr Ian McCarthy & Dr Andreea Font

It has been empirically established that the properties of galaxies (their shape, size, colour, star formation rate, etc.) depend on the large scale environment, but the physical mechanisms that cause this remain elusive. The student will use cosmological simulations to track the evolution of galaxies as they fall into massive groups and clusters and pinpoint the processes that dominate quenching and morphological transformation.
