  • Modelling Nova spectra with a Monte Carlo code

    The early phases of Novae are well observed but have not been the subject of much quantitative modelling.

    In this mostly theoretical project, the student would modify an existing supernova radiation transport code based on the Monte Carlo method in order to adapt it to the conditions relevant in Nova outflows (different radius-velocity relation, hence different coupling between different points in the expanding Nova atmosphere).

    The new Nova code could then be used to model a few examples of observed Nava eruptions in order to determine basic properties such as abundances and masses in the ejecta.
