This project aims at understanding how the Milky Way Galaxy was formed.  The student will join the efforts of the Sloan Ditigal Sky Survey (SDSS) Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) to determine the chemical compositions of an unprecedented sample of over 150,000 stars, in order to establish the history of star formation and mass assembly of the Galaxy.  Specifically, the student will explore (proprietary) APOGEE-2 and Gaia data to study one of the following frontier topics in Galactic astrophysics:

    • Formation of the Galactic bulge
    • Formation of the Galactic thin and thick disks
    • Formation of the Galactic halo
    • Globular cluster formation
