Professor Ivan Baldry, programme leader, module leader for Introduction to Data Analytics. Ivan's research is in the area of galaxy properties, population statistics and evolution. This involves analysis and visualization of large multi-dimensional data sets. Dr. Sandra Ortega Martorell, module leader for Big Data Computing. Sandra teaches data mining to maths students, and big data computing and data analytics to students of this masters in data science. Her current research interest includes the development and application of machine learning approaches to biomedical problems, mainly in cancer.
Dr. Daniel Perley, module leader for Statistical Methods in R. Daniel studies explosive astrophysical transients, such as supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. He employs large, wide-field time-domain telescope surveys to discover and characterize these objects Dr. Ivo Siekmann, module leader for Efficient Algorithms for Complex Data Sets. Ivo applies Bayesian statistics using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques to biological systems. He is interested in: how the tiny building blocks of living cells are told what to do (aka "intracellular signal transduction"); how infectious diseases spread in humans and plankton; and how different species manage to live together in an ecosystem, even though not necessarily peacefully.
Professor Iain Steele, module leader for Research Methods in Data Science, director of the 2-m Liverpool Robotic Telescope and PI of the project to build its successor 4-m New Robotic Telescope. He has reaseach interests in astronomical instrumentation and advanced software systems for time domain astrophysics Dr. Ivan Olier-Caparroso, module leader for Machine Learning and Data Mining, and Work-Based Project. Ivan's research is in Machine Learning (ML). In particular, he is interested in the development of new ML algorithms to tackle data heterogeneity and model explainability problems. He typically works with large multi-modal databases to develop ML applications in healthcare and drug discovery.
